Here at the Strategist, we like to think of ourselves as crazy (in the good way) about the stuff we buy, but as much as we’d like to, we can’t try everything. Which is why we have People’s Choice, in which we find the best-reviewed (that’s four-to-five-star reviews and lots of ’em) products and single out the most convincing. While we’ve written about the favorite umbrellas of seasoned Seattleites, deals on stylish raincoats, and the best rain boots for women and men, here we’re looking into the best umbrellas that you can find on Amazon. (Note that reviews have been edited for length and clarity.) (104) add
“This winter in the Midwest, we have had blizzards, torrential downpours, and tornadic wind and storms, and this umbrella has protected me from all of that already in the few weeks I have had it. At the bus stop, other people on the campus where I work are fighting with their umbrellas being blown inside out, while I have a Cheshire Cat grin at my relative comforts.”
“I’ve had this umbrella for three months, and this week — after a windstorm, much rain, and a run-in with a blackberry bush — I feel compelled to write a review. A few days ago, I stepped aside on a narrow path to let someone by and the umbrella got entangled in a tall blackberry bush that I had not seen next to me. As I was tugging to free the umbrella, another passerby commented, ‘Wow, that is really stuck in there.’ Amazingly enough, although I expected to see tears and runs in the fabric after this thorny battle, there were none! We also had a windstorm this week that knocked out power and downed tree branches … but the umbrella held up well. All I had to do was hang on during wind gusts, and the textured handle with indentations makes it comfortable and easy to hang on to.” (150) add
“Exactly what I was looking for in an umbrella — small and compact, but a serious workhorse. Already used this a few times in Chicago’s windy spring rains, and it performed perfectly — no inside out flips. Folds down to the perfect size and actually fits in my purse, but it opens plenty large enough. The handle and components seem sturdy, so I am optimistic this will be my go-to umbrella.”
“I bought this umbrella to take on my honeymoon to London, and boy, am I glad I had this with me because it rained like crazy! What I loved most about this umbrella was how portable it was. I just threw the folded-up umbrella into my backpack and could use it as needed. The sleeve you can put the umbrella in helps keep the rest of your bag dry. Even right after getting out of the rain and placing the umbrella in the sleeve, my bag stayed dry. Both my husband and I, although a bit cramped, did fit under this umbrella. However, if I were to do it again … I’d buy one for him and one for myself — especially since the price is so reasonable! I highly recommend this umbrella.” (133) add
“This lightweight umbrella is perfect in my bag. It is sturdy and very well made. I love how waterproof it is and also how easy it is to open and close. It opens up to a nice generous size, so when I am using it, it will cover me and my bag as well. I have gotten umbrellas from this company before (I buy umbrellas like some people buy shoes) and was so impressed with that umbrella, I decided to come back to this company again. It’s not the first and it definitely will not be my last!”
“Tired of replacing flimsy umbrellas? Then this is the one for you. This umbrella’s strong, stable, aerodynamic, and easy to control, even in high winds. It’s NOT a flimsy excuse for rain cover that’s going to wind up in a landfill after the first big gust. What’s different about the Blunt is its low profile and tensioned canopy, which allows the umbrella to withstand the wind without putting stress on the carrier. The inventor came up with a ‘radial tensioning system’ that uses double struts and telescopic ribs to distribute the effort used in opening the umbrella throughout the entire canopy surface. That creates a strong, aerodynamic umbrella with no sharp points at the edge of the canopy – so the fabric won’t easily tear away from the covered tips and bystanders won’t get poked. Yes, it is expensive, but if you care for your belongings and live where it rains, this is definitely a MUST buy.” (157) add
“While on vacation in London, I learned about all the umbrellas that Queen Elizabeth uses (random, I know). Apparently, she uses an umbrella similar to this one so the fans can always see her face, plus it keeps her hair perfectly shaped. Upon returning, I had to try one out for myself — the queen’s got the right idea! This umbrella keeps me much drier than a standard, wide umbrella, and I love that it fully covers my face and long hair. It opens and collapses pretty seamlessly, and the material is sturdy.”
“Perfect! My son wanted to give his grandmother a new compact umbrella because she’d been complaining that her old one was broken. The problem was that he wanted to get her something REALLY colorful, and she only carries black umbrellas. The solution … this cute little umbrella with her own little patch of blue sky. He felt great about the selection and she was thrilled. On top of being attractive, it’s well-constructed. I gave it a test-drive before wrapping it and was very pleased with the size, weight, and the action of the automatic-opening mechanism. This umbrella is excellent quality for the price and will give her years of good coverage (and in Washington State, that’s really saying something.)” (119) add
“It’s so big, my neighbors think a solar eclipse happens whenever I open this ginormous umbrella. I believe this was the same umbrella that granted Mary Poppins the magic of flight. With this umbrella, I might consider applying for an USHPA paragliding license. If this umbrella didn’t have those special wind-release vents, I would have found myself on a yellow brick road after the last hurricane. It’s so big, I think I will have to transport it on the roof of the car on a ski rack.”
“This umbrella intrigued me because it was a little different, and I needed a new umbrella. I was not disappointed by it, the design is amazing, so you don’t actually get wet when getting into your car. It’s quite slick how when you fold it up the water stays on the inside and you can easily close the umbrella while closing the door with almost no gap between the two. I haven’t actually used the handle to its full potential, but like that I can slip it onto my wrist if I need both hands, which I’m sure will happen next time it rains since I usually have kids with me and end up holding an umbrella under my chin, but now I don’t have to do that. This is a fabulous product and a game changer to keep you and your vehicle as dry as possible.” (147) add
“Bought this to feel like a fine English gentleman. After purchasing it, I do indeed feel much more like a fine English gentleman. The umbrella is light, pops open easily, and keeps the rain out. The color is nice too, just as you’d expect.”

“Just got this today for my Doggyride dog stroller. My poor senior pooch was a little hot in this blazing summer weather we are having, and I was looking for something that would work to give her shade in her new stroller that has a big opening in front. The sun was beating down on her even though we are going out early in the morning, and I could tell she was hot. This is the perfect solution for us. It attached nicely to the handlebar, and being that is swivels and has so many angles, I can get it so she is completely covered and in the shade now for her entire ride.” (114) add
“It cost more than any of my other umbrellas, but this has stood up to my 2-year-old’s rough play. We haven’t actually used it for rain yet, since it’s summertime in Southern California right now. But my daughter really wanted her own umbrella after seeing it on TV one day. So I got her this one, and she plays with her umbrella almost every day. Opening and closing it. She hits and swats things with it. She swings it around. She twirls it. She steps on it even when open. She’s sat in it. It’s maintained its shape and doesn’t look any worse for the wear. I think it will be fine by the time wintertime and some rain comes around.” (121) add
“Bought this for our beach vacation and it works so well. We decided we wanted two umbrellas, so bought a different brand umbrella with an anchor while at the beach, and on windy days this stayed in the sand with no problem. The cheaper umbrella kept pulling out of the sand, even with the anchor. Definitely buying another one of the Tommy Bahama–brand umbrellas before our beach vacation this year.”
[Editor’s note: We’ve written about this umbrella, a Long Beach Island favorite, before here.]
“By far, the sexiest umbrella I have ever seen. Unbelievable quality for the price. I bought the blue and white. It feels solid when opening. So different from anything I’ve ever used. Plenty big for three, maybe four. The golf-club handle is so comfortable to hold and offers great grip. It will look like one of your clubs if placed in your golf bag. I know it’s just an umbrella, but the gang over at Procella really put some love into this thing and it shows. You know it immediately upon unleashing it from the box. Here’s hoping it rains when your umbrella arrives.” (103) add
“I get sunburned easily, and in minutes. Even with sunscreen higher than 20. More like intense rashes that keep me from sleep a few days. I cannot thank the makers of this product enough. I was able to go on an eight-hour hike through Yosemite National Park on my honeymoon and see double rainbows in waterfalls that I would never been able to hike to without misery the next three days. This umbrella WORKS! I did get a few stares along the hike for sure, but I think 98 percent of them were thinking how much they wanted shade and a cooler environment from which to enjoy our magnificent surroundings in July’s afternoon sun.” (114) add
