The Moto G6 series might be released in May

Motorola’s popular and inexpensive G series of phones is due for an update, and rumors increasingly point toward some new models arriving very soon. The latest leaks suggest the forthcoming Moto G6 could be released next month alongside two additional versions: a G6 Play and a G6 Plus.

Pages on Fry’s website, which have since been pulled, indicated the phones would be released in the middle of the May. They’ll likely be announced sometime before that.

The Moto G6 is expected to sit in the middle of the pack. It’ll have a 5.7-inch display with an 18:9 aspect ratio, a resolution slightly above 1080p, 32GB of storage, a fingerprint reader on the front, and a dual-camera system on the back. According to AndroidHeadlines, it’ll run on a Snapdragon 450 processor and a 3,000mAh battery. The Fry’s listing said it would sell for $250. There’s nothing particularly standout about those specs at that price (although dual cameras aren’t super common on cheaper phones), but Motorola’s G phones have always stood out for being well-rounded, without falling down in any major ways. Then there’s the Moto G6 Plus, which is supposed to have a 5.93-inch display, with the same 18:9 aspect ratio and slightly greater than 1080p resolution. There’s no new info on the G6 Plus today, but prior leaks indicated it would have multiple RAM and storage options, up to 64GB. It’ll also run on a Snapdragon 630, making for a faster — and more expensive — phone than the standard G6.

The G6 Play is supposed to be the entry-level model. Traditionally, Motorola has given Play models bigger batteries, and that’ll apparently be the case once again. AndroidHeadlines says it should include a 4,000mAh battery, which ought to last well into a second day of use. For comparison, the Galaxy S9 has a 3,000mAh battery, and it’s a much more demanding phone. The downside is, the Play will be lower-end in other ways. It’ll have a Snapdragon 427 processor and only a single camera. And while it’ll maintain the 5.7-inch display of the normal model, it appears the resolution will be below 1080p. Fry’s had it listed for $200. (108) add
