What secret lies at the heart of Westworld’s maze? Well, it might just be Eighties pop star Rick Astley.
Fans of HBO’s hit sci-fi drama spent the first series slowly unpicking its enigmatic plot – but the show’s creators have surprised viewers by apparently promising to “spoil” the entire plot for series two before it hits the airwaves.
In a recent online Q&A for Reddit, showrunners Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy said they planned to “post a video that lays out the plot (and twists and turns) of season 2. Everything. The whole sordid thing. Up front”.
And for a brief moment, it seemed the pair had lived up to that threat. A 25-minute video appeared on Youtube this Monday promising “FULL SPOILERS for Westworld”, beginning with what appeared to be brand new footage from the show’s second series.
The video, which has been watched almost 400,000 times, shows scientist Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) wandering along a beach, as he remembers an encounter with android Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood). Wood appears at a piano, and begins to sing Rick Astley’s Never Gonna Give You Up – a reference to the online trend for “Rickrolling”, where viewers looking for a particular video are misdirected to Astley’s cheesy 1987 hit.
The video ends with 20 minutes of moody black-and-white footage of a dog sat behind the piano keyboard, while the Westworld theme tune plays on repeat.
It’s clearly a joke, but knowing Westworld fans’ penchant for over-analysis it’s likely a few viewers will be discussing the symbolic importance of that dog for months to come.
Westworld season two premieres on April 22, in the US on HBO and in the UK on Sky Atlantic
